I was trained as a figurative sculptor at the Art Students League and at the Penna. Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia PA back in the 60's. My intention was to try and understand the universal patterns I could see in the figure. Such patterns are everywhere but in the figure it was very close to me being human.
When I moved to Arkansas and was looking for a way to support my studies I offered my services as a portraitist. It was a great success.
I started with what I called the "Mantlepiece Portrait" a small scale impressionistic sculpture. In the course of 10 years or so I sculpted almost 1000 sculptures of this sort mostly of children. I was also asked to do formal busts of Arkansas heroes and digniteries. The University of Arkansas and Walmart had me make busts.
